The Romanian postal market is worth 3.2 billion lei

The ANCOM statistical data report on postal services in 2018 shows encouraging evolutions: the revenues obtained from the provision of postal services grew by 13%, while the amount of inbound cross-border postal items reached 46.5 million, an upsurge by 32%. Thus, the postal market was worth 3.2 billion lei in 2018, with more than 580 million postal items being sent to addressees from the country and from abroad”, Mr. Eduard Lovin, vicepresident of ANCOM, said.
Postal traffic in 2018
Out of the 582 million postal items (+5%), 536 million were domestic (up by 3%) and 46 million were cross-border, an increase by 32% exclusively owed to the inbound cross-border traffic.
Approximately 3 of 4 postal items were letter-post items (448 million), 1 of 6 were parcels (94 million), while the rest were direct mail items (18 million), Express items (13.5 million), postal orders (7 million), respectively correspondence items and printed matter items above 2 kg (1.6 million).
In 2018, the average number of postal items per inhabitant reached 30 (up by 6%), of which 5 were parcels (growth by 15%).
The report also shows that providers are concerned with using the new technologies for improving their distribution networks and making available to the users a growing number of automatic delivery systems. Although still at a low rate, the providers installed 60 new automatic access points in 2018, their number doubling as compared to 2017.
Value of the postal market
The total value of the postal market in 2018 amounted to 3.2 billion lei, by 13% more than in 2017. The revenues obtained from domestic items increased by 10%, while those from cross-border items grew by 19%.
By the revenues obtained, the main competitors on the Romanian postal market are Fan Courier, with 21% market share, the National Company Romanian Post (20%) and Urgent Cargus, with 13% of the total revenues.
Universal service
The traffic of universal service postal items reached 208 million in 2018 (growing by 21% from the previous year). Within the total universal service postal items, 82% were domestic (170 million items), and the remaining 18% were cross-border (38 million items).
Complaints regarding postal services
Although the total number of complaints received by the postal service providers grew by 14% in 2018 (561 thousand), the number of those deemed grounded remained steady, i.e. 98 thousand, accounting for 17% within the total. For 35,000 of these grounded complaints, total compensations amounting to 9.7 million lei were granted, while the average value of a compensation reached 278 lei, up by 46%.
