Romania, a member of the ITU Council

”Romania has obtained the largest number of votes for Region C in the elections for the Council of the International Telecommunication Union, during the Plenipotentiary Conference organised in Dubai, The United Arab Emirates. 137 of the 179 Member States in the Conference voted for Romania! It is a great success for our country, which will thus have an important role in the governing body of the organisation that sets the broad telecommunication policy trends on a global level”, declared ANCOM’s President, Sorin Grindeanu. ”Today’s success proves once more that Romania’s representatives in the works of the ITU are very active and appreciated by their colleagues. We thank to all those who contributed to our country’s victory. We are proud of this achievement and rejoice it once more as this is the year of Romania’s Centennial Celebrations.”, declared Manuela Catrina, State Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Information Society.

Results of the elections for the ITU Council, Region C

Romania participated in the elections as a representative of Region C (Eastern Europe and Northern Asia), where 7 countries ran for 5 seats in the ITU Council. Here are the final results of the elections:

  • Romania – 137 votes
  • Russian Federation – 136 votes
  • Poland – 125 votes
  • Azerbaijan – 119 votes
  • Czech Republic – 112 votes
  • Bulgaria – 110 votes
  • Kyrgyzstan – 95 votes

Following the votes received, Romania, The Russian Federation, Poland, Azerbaijan and The Czech Republic obtained mandates in the ITU Council.

About the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2018


The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP) takes place once every 4 years, on which occasion the management team of the organisation is elected and the action directions until the next PP are determined. This year, the Conference (PP-18) has been organised in Dubai, The United Arab Emirates, from 29 October to 16 November. During PP-18, Mr. Houlin Zhao was re-elected as ITU Secretary-General, and Mr. Malcolm Johnson as ITU Deputy Secretary-General.
