Netograf.ro : Average download speed for fixed internet data increased by more than 70%

29.06.2017

Statistics on the quality of the fixed and mobile internet service in Romania generated by Netograf.ro – ANCOM’s application for measuring the internet service quality – reveal that Romanians benefited from national average actual speeds of 95 Mbps for data download over fixed internet connections and 26 Mbps for data download over mobile internet connections, in 2016. ANCOM’s Report on the quality of the internet access service in 2016 is available, in Romanian, on the Authority’s website.
Fixed internet download speeds, by county
Measurements performed on Netograf.ro indicate that, in 2016, the average download speed for fixed internet connections, on a national level, ranged between 48.37 Mbps (in Harghita county) and 117.96 Mbps (in Ilfov county).
National average – fixed and mobile internet download
Tests carried out on www.netograf.roindicate that, in 2016, average download speeds increased compared to 2015, both for fixed and for mobile internet. Thus, the average download speeds over fixed internet connections improved by 78.4%, from 53.2 Mbps to 94.95 Mbps (142.45 Mbps for wired connections and 48.99 Mbps for wireless connections). Moreover, the average download speed over mobile internet connections rose by 34.7%, from 19.2 Mbps to 25.9 Mbps (32.98 Mbps for outdoor connections and 22.93 Mbps for indoor connections).
Such higher average download speeds in Romania could be achieved in the context of improved access networks, both in the fixed internet segment – where the number of connections enabling fast (>30Mbps) and ultrafast (>100Mbps) internet access grew –, and in the mobile internet segment – where the number of 4G connections doubled in 2016, compared to 2015.
How Netograf.ro statistics are generated
Statistics regarding 2016 fixed and mobile internet were generated by Netograf.ro based on approximately 182,000 valid tests conducted by internet users in Romania. ANCOM recommends the users intending to test their fixed connections to use wired terminal equipment. The average speeds of wireless connections are approximately 3 times lower than the wired ones, given the limited transmission capacity of wireless routers (which usually ensure nominal rates of maximum 300 Mbps). Furthermore, for Wi-Fi transmissions, speed is negatively influenced by the distance from the wireless router/transmitter and by existing obstacles between the terminal and the transmitter. Further details on generating Netograf statistics are available here.
About Netograf.ro

Netograf.ro is the application for monitoring and assessing the quality of the internet access service developed by ANCOM in order to offer the Romanian users an instrument which is independent (does not depend on the servers made available by the providers and/or their location), objective (presents the internet access service quality as experienced by the end-users, since it is measured using a single reference point for all the users of internet access services in Romania) and free of charge.Â
