22.02.2023

According to the statistics processed by ANCOM based on the tests carried out on the Netograf platform, users in Romania experienced an average download speed of 533 Mbps for fixed cable internet in 2022, up by about 17% compared to the previous year, and an average upload speed of 455 Mbps, up by 52% compared to 2021, at the level of the first 5 fixed internet providers according to the number of connections. Similar increases have been recorded in terms of nationwide mobile internet, with users experiencing an average download speed of 38 Mbps, 26% higher than in the previous year and an average upload speed of 15 Mbps, 46% higher than in 2021.

The analysis of the 2022 statistics for fixed internet shows a balancing trend between the upload and download speeds for connections provided on cable and via Wi-Fi in the case of the large providers active on the Romanian market, which suggests an adaptation of the electronic communications services to the extensive user needs. This trend also signals the onset of mass digitization, in the sense of preparing Internet access support services to support an intensive use of internet-based services for more and more activities that also require significant uplink speed, such as, for example, telework or teleschool.

As for the average data transmission speeds for the mobile internet access service, there is an auspicious increase even in the absence of significant national implementations of 5G mobile technologies. At the same time, considering the experience of other states and regions in 5G implementation, the effects of the mobile spectrum licences awarded at the end of 2022 on the average data transmission speeds will very likely be seen starting this year.
