Fixed Internet Continues Upward Trend

16.12.2013

The number of Internet access connections at fixed locations keeps the previous years’ upward trend, while the fixed telephony market stagnates, according to the data reported by the providers and published by ANCOM today in the Statistical Data Report regarding the Romanian Electronic Communications Market, for the first half of 2013.
Thus, according to the data reported by the 844 providers of internet access services, the number of broadband fixed internet access connections reached 3.8 million, up by 6.7% compared to the previous semester. The number of broadband internet access connections installed at fixed locations, for residential users, increased in the period under analysis by approximately 8%, to 3.5 million, while the number of such connections installed for business users registered a decrease by 2.3%, reaching 0.33 million. Compared to end-2012, the penetration rate of fixed broadband internet access connections per 100 inhabitants is 18.8%, up by 1.2 p.p., whereas the penetration rate per 100 households increased by 3 p.p., to almost 46%.
The difference between the rural and urban internet access levels is still significant, i.e. 1.8 million connections. Thus, out of all the 3.8 million connections, approximately one million were installed in the rural area, by mid-2013, and 2.8 million – in the urban area.
As regards the last mile infrastructure, the most important semestrial increases, in absolute values, were registered by UTP/FTP cable connections (increasing by 200 thousand, up to 2.2 million connections). Coaxial cable connections dropped by 100 thousand, to 0.4 million, while the number of connections using twisted metallic pairs kept the constant evolution of the previous semesters, reaching 1 million.
Moreover, the number of connections using the FTTx technology keeps booming. Thus, out of the total number of broadband internet access connections provided at fixed locations, 3.7 million (97.6%) use this technology. The FTTx technology uses fiber optic up to the end-user’s residence or to a nearby location, access being ensured by other means (e.g. coaxial cable, radio, UTP/FTP cable, twisted metallic pairs), which enables the provision of high data transfer rates.
According to the indicators of the fixed telephony market, in accordance with the data provided by the 46 active providers, the first half of 2013 brought insignificant growth compared to the last semester of 2012, as regards the number of subscribers, respectively the number of corresponding access lines (+0.7%, up to 4.04 million subscribers, respectively +1.1%, up to 4.7 million lines). An access line is, in fact, the so-called ”telephone set” installed, whereas a subscriber is the legal or natural person who concluded a contract with the service provider, for one or several access lines. The fixed telephony penetration rate of per 100 inhabitants reached 23.4%, while per 100 households – 51.1%.
Concerning the usage, compared to the same semester of 2012, the traffic achieved by the end-users through the fixed public telephone networks dropped by 8.6%, down to 2.6 billion minutes.
In the first half of 2013, the users spoke, on average, 1 hour and 32 minutes per access line, 9 minutes less than in the first half of 2012, while the average call duration reached 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

The statistical data report regarding the Romanian electronic communications market for the first half of 2013 was drawn up based on the data reported by the active electronic communications providers, who conducted commercial activity between 1 January and 30 June 2013 and is available, in Romanian, here.
