Fixed Internet Connections of at Least 100Mbps Almost Doubled by Mid- 2015

15.12.2015

As of 30 June 2015, Romanians accessed the Internet using 4.1 million fixed broadband connections, generating a total traffic of 2.2 million TB in H1 2015, whereas the average monthly consumption per user reached 90 GB, according to ANCOM’s most recent Statistical Data Report on the Romanian Electronic Communications Market at mid-2015 (available in Romanian). Analysing the connections based on  the ”best-effort” transfer rates contracted by users, the most significant annual evolution was registered in the number of connections enabling speeds of at least 100Mbps, which grew by 86% compared to mid-2014, thus exceeding 2 million. Infographic here.
Out of all the fixed broadband connections, 48% enable speeds of at least 100Mbps, 14% - at least 30Mbps (up to 100Mbps), 23% - at least 10Mbps (up to 30Mbps), 14% - at least 2Mbps (up to 10Mbps), the rest of 1% being connections of up to 2Mbps. Moreover, stronger growth can be noticed in the number of fixed internet access connections installed in rural areas, which increased by +13.3% (from 1.0 million on 30.06.2014 to more than 1.1 million on 30.06.2015), while urban area connections witnessed only +4.2% growth rate (from 2.9 million on 30.06.2014 to 3.0 million on 30.06.2015). Thus, by mid-2015, 3 million out of the total of 4.1 million fixed broadband internet connections were installed in urban areas, and more than 1.1 million in rural areas. Furthermore, the fixed broadband internet penetration rate was 20.9% on population level, respectively 50.3% on household level.
Concerning the access infrastructure, in H1 2015 – on the one hand – FTTH connections tripled, reaching 0.3 million, and – on the other hand – access connections on coaxial cable decreased by 17.3%, amounting to 0.5 million, compared to H1 2014. As well, UTP/FTP cable connections registered a slight growth, up to 2.2 million, while connections over copper wires (xDSL) reached 1 million. UTP/FTP connections hold the most important weight in the total number of fixed broadband internet access connections – 54%, followed by xDSL connections – 24%, and by coaxial cable connections – 12%.
Though fixed internet communications keep the growing trend of the recent period, fixed telephony is constantly going down. Thus, ANCOM’s data indicate decrease both in the number of access lines (-7%, from 4.6 million on 30.06.2014 to approximately 4.3 million on 30.06.2015) and, respectively, in the number of subscribers (-6.7%, from 4 million on 30.06.2014 to 3.7 million on 30.06.2015), as well as in respect of the voice traffic achieved by these subscribers (-16.7%, from 2.4 billion minutes in H1 2014 to 2.0 billion minutes in H1 2015). On 30 June 2015, the fixed telephony penetration rate was 21.6% on population level, while the penetration rate on household level stood at 46.7%.
The voice traffic achieved on fixed networks in H1 2015 was 2.0 billion minutes, with downward trends on all segments compared to H1 2014. Thus, fixed-to-fixed voice traffic dropped by -17.7%, fixed-to-mobile traffic decreased by -16.5%, whereas voice traffic to networks outside Romania diminished by 7.1%. Approximately 67% of all the calls were directed to fixed networks, 26% to mobile networks and 8% to international destinations.
In H1 2015, the monthly average duration of calls over one access line was 1 hour and 15 minutes, a call having an average duration of 3 minutes and 9 seconds.

The consolidated Statistical Data Report on the Romanian Electronic Communications Market at mid-2015 has been elaborated based on the data reported by the active providers of electronic communications networks and services that conducted commercial activities during 1 January – 30 June 2015, and is available, in Romanian, here.
