Disinformation campaign carried out on a social media platform

Further to the investigation carried out in cooperation by several state institutions with attributions in the field, ANCOM has been mandated to communicate the following:
As a result of the investigations carried out at the level of the Romanian information space by the state institutions with attributions in the field, a disinformation campaign was identified at the level of a social media platform likely to generate a state of panic and concern, the aim being to amplify the anti-system sentiment and to decrease the level of voter turnout.
Thus, at the level of the social media platform, several accounts with inauthentic behaviour have shared links to sites hosted outside Romania, where several false alarmist news regarding incidents involving high-ranking people or their family members or catastrophes with a large number of victims, with high emotional impact, are presented.
Promoting this kind of misleading elements is in contradiction with the provisions of the DSA that establishes protection measures for European citizens.
Considering the mentioned aspects, the representatives of the company that owns the platform were contacted and the network of accounts involved in promoting such content within local online communities was reported and partially eliminated, in order to keep these influencing activities below the detection threshold at national level.
For an effective counteraction, the competent authorities (Ministry of Internal Affairs, ANCOM and the Special Telecommunications Service) have taken measures to block access to the identified malicious websites.
