29.08.2017

At the invitation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) management, during 28-29 August 2017, in Geneva, ANCOM’s president Adrian Dita took part in a series of meetings with the elected officials and senior management of ITU, the United Nations’ specialized agency for communications and information technology.

ANCOM’s president discussed with ITU’s Secretary General Houlin Zhao about the most important issues concerning the evolution of telecommunications worldwide and their influence on local markets. Adrian Dita presented the vision of the Romanian Authority on the regulation of the electronic communications market in Romania, as well as the opportunities for strengthening the cooperation between ANCOM and the relevant UN bodies.

One of ANCOM’s objectives is promoting the Romanian communications market on an international level and increasing the representativeness of our country within the ITU, therefore the Authority’s president reiterated the commitment of actively involving the Authority's staff in the ITU study groups that analyse and define policies in the field of global communications.

The ITU Secretary General appreciated that Romania is one of the Union's trustworthy partners, our country being an example of good practices and remarkable developments in the field of telecommunications.

ANCOM President had meetings with the Deputy Secretary General, Malcolm Johnson, as well as with the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau, Mr. Brahima Sanou, with the Director of the Radiocommunication Bureau, Mr. Francois Rancy and with the Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, Mr. Chaesub Lee.

Romania has an active presence in all ITU structures, participating in Plenipotentiary Conferences, in Council sessions and World Conferences, as well as in study groups, conferences, seminars or other meetings organized by the three sectors of the Union. In 2014, Romania was confirmed for its sixth consecutive term as a member of the ITU Council, for Region C (Eastern Europe and North Asia). Romania has been a member of the UIT Council since 1994.

The Romanian communications regulator (ANCOM) has been participating in the ITU activities ever since its establishment, and its representatives have often received the Member States' vote to perform important functions within the working structures of the International Telecommunication Union, with Romanian experts actively contributing to numerous initiatives for improving the electronic communications segment on a global and a national level.
