90% of the fixed internet users in Romania use their internet at home to search for information, read news and stay posted on various events, whereas 77% of them use it for accessing social networks, according to a market survey conducted by the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM). The data reveal that the purposes of household fixed internet usage may fall under four categories: information, communication, leisure activities and electronic transactions.

Besides the need for information, Romanian users access their fixed internet at home for communication purposes, i.e. 75% of the respondents communicate with their family or friends by instant messages, while 71% of them – by e-mail. Leisure activities rank third in the categories of purposes for which Romanians use their fixed internet at home, as declared by 61% of the respondents, who watch online TV programmes, videos or movies, as well as by 52% of them, who show that they use their fixed internet to play online games at home. Nevertheless, the survey indicates that fewer Romanians use the internet for online shopping (39%), and even fewer - to conduct banking transactions or to pay invoices by Internet Banking (22%).
Concerning the usage frequency, a Romanian uses his/her internet at home, on average, 24 days a month. 74% of the respondents access the internet on a daily or nearly daily basis (90%, in the 16-24 year-old category), while 16% declare that they use it 2-3 times a week, and 4% - once a week.
The survey also shows that the users generally access their fixed internet at home on a personal computer: 72% of them use a PC/desktop, 61% use a laptop/netbook, whereas 43% access this service on a smartphone and 32% on a tablet. A further device by means of which residential users have started accessing the internet is represented by Smart TV sets, used in 9 % of the households.
When choosing an internet connection, the main criterion taken into account by the users is the financial one, 66% of the Romanians weighing considerably the subscription price. 62% of them are interested in the connection reliability, and 48% take into consideration the maximum transfer rates offered by a provider.
In this context, we remind the users that the Authority created two instruments for identifying the fixed internet providers that best answer their communication needs – Veritel.ro, the application by which they can compare all the fixed internet offers available in the market at the moment, and Netograf.ro, the website where they can measure and compare the transfer rates of all the fixed internet providers in Romania.
The market survey on the residential use of fixed internet services in Romania was conducted by Mercury Research for ANCOM, which has used it in its market analyses for assessing the competition level in the retail market for broadband internet access services provided at fixed locations. The survey was conducted during October-November 2014, on a sample of 1,469 persons that have and use an internet connection at home, nationally representative for the population aged 16 and older. The margin of error is ±2.6%, at a confidence level of 95%.
