During 2024, the number of Gigabit connections increased by 16% to almost 2.4 million, mainly due to the increase in the number of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections to 5.4 million (+8%). Thus, Gigabit connections account for 35% of fixed internet connections. Although they don't reach Gigabit, another 60% of connections exceed 100 Mbps. Infographic is available here.

The ANCOM report on the telecom market at the end of 2024 is available, in Romanian, here, showing annual dynamics as follows:

Fixed Internet

  • The number of connections reached 6.8 million in 2024 (+3%), with 95% of them allowing speeds over 100 Mbps
  • 35% of connections allow speeds of at least 1 Gbps
  • The average monthly traffic reached 88 GB per inhabitant (+10%), i.e. almost 3 GB/day
  • At a national level, the penetration rate per 100 households was 83% (89% in urban areas and 75% in rural areas). The growth rate in the number of connections in rural areas (+5%) exceeds that in urban areas (+2%)
  • By number of connections, the top 3 providers are: Digi (72%), Orange (16%) and Vodafone (10%)

Mobile Internet

  • The number of active connections continues to increase slightly to 21.7 million, of which 18.6 million used 4G and/or 5G
  • The number of 5G connections increased by 53% in 2024, reaching 3.5 million (16% of the total)
  • Almost 21 million connections were made via mobile phone
  • The average monthly traffic was almost 13 GB per capita (+18%), i.e. over 400 MB daily
  • According to the number of active connections, the top 3 providers are: Orange (35%), Digi (30%) and Vodafone (22%)

Mobile

  • 22.8 million active mobile SIM cards (-3%) at end-2024, subscription-based: 74%
  • The increase in the number of subscription-based SIM cards  (+1 million) did not compensate for the significant decrease in the number of active prepaid card users (-1.8 million)
  • Voice traffic decreased by 3% to 58 billion minutes, i.e. 4 hours and 15 minutes/month/inhabitant
  • By number of active SIM cards, Orange had a market share of 35%, Digi 28%, and Vodafone 25%

Television

  • The number of subscribers to TV retransmission services stayed at 7.8 million
  • The migration of subscribers from satellite/DTH services (-138,000 subscribers) to cable services (+188,000 subscribers) continues
  • By number of subscribers at end-2024, Digi had a market share of 75%, Orange 13%, Vodafone 9%

Revenues from the telecom sector

  • Revenues in the telecom sector decreased by 5% in 2024, to RON 16.1 billion (approximately EUR 3.2 billion), mainly on account of wholesale telephony services
  • Internet (fixed and mobile) generated 40% of total revenues, mobile telephony 29%, retransmission of TV programs 15%, fixed telephony 8%, and other types of networks/services 8%
  • By the revenues from the provision of electronic communications networks and services, the top 3 providers were: Orange (36%), Digi (29%) and Vodafone (24%)
